Cooking Club

Causton Cooking Club started in February 2015. During this time 59 pupils from year 5 and 6 have participated in 30 sessions. So far we’ve prepared bread, nachos, pizzas, falafel, samosas, sushi and chips. The current cooking club consists of 4 lessons with the following menu:

Week 1: Bread

Week 1: bread baking and bread tasting

During the first week pupils learn how to mix and knead dough. Whilst waiting for the bread from the oven we’ll do a bread tasting with butter, garlic and herb butter, an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip with crushed garlic and rosemary and pa amb tomàquet (squeezed tomato with olive oil).

Week 2: Pizza

Week 2: cutting skills and pizza

In the second week pupils acquire safe cutting skills (bridge and claw grip). The different pizza toppings (peppers, mushrooms, mozzarella, pepperoni, olives, ham and goat’s cheese) are cut before the children mix and knead the pizza dough. We prepare vegan and non-vegan pizzas. As a quick and tasty alternative to the normal pizza base we’ll also prepare flatbread.

During this week we will prepare five recipes. The pupils will improve their cutting skills and learn new skills: juicing lemons and deseeding chillies and pomegranates. At the end their herbal knowledge will be put to a test.

The last session will be dedicated to potatoes and sweet potatoes. Apart from using their cutting and juicing skills, the pupils will need to measure spices. We will finish our session with a tasting to find the best accompaniment:  malt vinegar, mayonnaise, mayonnaise with lime or tomato ketchup.
